Art and music encircle the mountains of Northern Miaoli
Featuring eight stunning productions, the 2025 edition of the annual Miaobei Arts Festival is organized around four themes — artistic legends, theater classics, iconic symphonies, and timeless maestros. Every year, the Miaobei Art Center strives to achieve its vision of connecting the mountainous region of Northern Miaoli with the world through art.
This year’s artistic legend segment places the spotlight on A-sun Wu, a world-acclaimed artist from Taiwan. His solo exhibition, “The Vitality of Austronesian Peoples,” encompasses one-of-a-kind paintings and installations that embody the memories of their community-centered agrarian lifestyle and reflect Wu’s deep connection with our planet and the cultures it nurtures. His art places Taiwan on the world map.
Two theater classics, “A Tale of Clay” by Ju Percussion Group and “3 Idiots” by Godot Theatre Company, will also be staged at the Miaobei Arts Center. Taking inspiration from the pottery makers of Miaoli’s Luzhunan community, the first play combines percussion and the physical language of theater with unique words that have shaped several Taiwanese generations to tell the layered story of our land. The latter is a lively rendition of a Bollywood blockbuster, made possible by the inaugural Mandarin rights secured by Godot Theatre and Taiwan’s international production abilities, that invigorates the audience with its passionate cast and upbeat life lessons.
In collaboration with Taiwan’s top ensembles — National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO), and Taipei Symphony Orchestra (TSO) — iconic symphonies have been a cornerstone of this annual affair since the inaugural Miaobei Arts Festival in 2020. Their collective promise of sharing time-honored masterpieces is fulfilled each year with wondrous performances blending original and rearranged compositions.
Rounding out the fourth theme is an eclectic performance by a Taiwanese quartet and American prodigy pianist Kit Armstrong. Their emotive recitals of chamber music by timeless maestros will be delivered with masterful precision and dashing modern flair.
The 2025 Miaobei Arts Festival runs from Oct. 3 through Dec. 28. Everyone is welcomed to partake in this artful celebration of human ingenuity hosted by the Miaobei Art Center.
